Dąmbski Palace

One of the most valuable and best examples of Baroque architecture, this 'palace' was the residence of many prominent Renaissance locals, and is now home to the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Musical Theatre.

Originally a Gothic tenement house from the 13th century, this building has a rich history marked by significant transformations. Its earliest known owner was Toruń merchant Gottfried Rebber (1394-1411). Later, it belonged to Georgw Sweydnicer, who was a business associate of Nicolaus Copernicus's father. In 1692, Bishop Stanisław Dąmbski purchased and transformed it into a Baroque masterpiece, with Jesuit Stanisław Solski as the architect. Dąmbski, whose name is now the namesake of the building, used it as his residence during visits to Toruń. Unlike other palaces in the city, it features a unique combination of stucco plant ornaments and Gothic brick elements. The palace served various purposes over centuries, from an inn to a military casino, and now houses the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Musical Theatre.
