Church of the Holy Spirit hero image

Breaking the trend of Brick Gothic architecture that Toruń is renowned for, the Church of the Holy Spirit is a baroque structure with a prime position on the Old Town Market Square.

Church of the Holy Spirit in Toruń.
The Church began life as a Lutheran church in the mid-18th century, with a Baroque style that has prevailed until this day. The vestry doors, constructed by a local mastercraftsman in 1756, uses a middle-eastern 'intarsia' technique with colourful decorative motifs from a variety of differrent woods. These motives, depicting Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, are arguably the best example of wood artistry in Toruń. The Rococo-style fitting in the interior have been preserved, most notably the main altar and the pulpit. The church's organ was completely destroyed in an interior fire in 1989, after which it was replaced by a replica.
