Bridge Gate hero image

Constructed in 1432 in the place of a former one, Toruń's 'Bridge Gate' takes its name from an old wooden bridge that once crossed over the Vistula River and continued on this thoroughfare into the old town.

The Bridge Gate in Toruń.
Of all the city gates from the medieval period, the Bridge Gate is both youngest and the most optimised in terms of defensive structural designs of the time. It also features a love bit of Gothic ornamentation around the tower, which can be seen all over Toruń's old centre. The bridge in question was actually built after the gates in the year 1500. Having been exposed to the elements, collateral damage from wartime, and various fires, this rickety old padestrian bridge was eventually replaced by the Józef Piłsudski railway bridge further upstream.
