Getting to Auschwitz from Katowice

The town of Oświęcim lies 33km south-east of Katowice and there are several ways of getting there, though the easiest may be just signing on for an organised tour through a local company like Silesia Trip . Direct trains go every couple of hours from Katowice central station and there are numerous bus options both big and small.

Buses   leave frequently from Katowice's main bus station ( ul. Skargi 1 ) every day starting at 8:00. A one way ticket costs about 9-20zł with the journey taking 60-70mins (prices and times depend on the company). The buses make several stops along the way, and most weekday will drop you off at the Oświęcim train station ( ul. Powstańców Śląskich 22 ), which is 1.5km away. From there hop on local buses 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 or 29 to make the short trip to the museum; you can purchase the 2.70zł fare from one of the nearby kiosks.

Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau are located 3km apart (with the train station strategically between them). Between Nov-Feb there is a free museum bus which shuttles visitors between the two parts of the camp every 30 minutes during weekdays from 10:00 (every 10 mins at weekends), with the last bus being at 16:10 (check upon arrival for schedule). Alternatively, catch a cab for a rich 15zł .

To get back to Katowice, waiting minibus taxis run by Malarek Tour (+48 605 31 50 77) can be found outside either camp - a group of eight would pay about 30zł/person. Otherwise you need to catch a bus from the Oświęcim train station . Again, local buses 19, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 or 29 make the trip from Auschwitz I to the train station for 3zł . Buses from there back to Katowice are frequent, but the last one leaves at 16:48 Mon-Sun.

Hi Teresa,  I recommend visiting the https://en.e-podroznik.pl site (English option available) and doing a quick search, which will provide more details about outward/return bus and train journeys (times, prices etc.). Don't worry about the station being far from the camp, there are local buses which take you directly there - once at Auschwitz, there is also a free museum shuttle service which takes you between both camps. Alternatively, you can book a tour to Auschwitz with SilesiaTrip.pl - https://www.inyourpocket.com/katowice/silesiatrippl_78763v  I hope this helps!

Hello I am looking for a bus from Katowice to Auschwitz and return same day 01/12/2019 but cant find a website in English to understand whats available and how to book. Any ideas? I think the train leaves you a little too far away from the camp. Teresa

Hi Arvind, I checked the https://www.e-podroznik.pl service for you, and it shows one bus (Hoper, D: 12:00, A:12:30) and one train (Koleje Śląskie, D: 12:43, A: 13:36) which meet your criteria, and a 3rd option (RS Transport, D:13:08, A: 14:00) as an emergency back-up! I recommend visiting the e-podroznik.pl site and doing a quick search, which will provide more details about each journey (prices etc.)

Hi Douglas, Uber certainly functions in various locations in Poland, including the Silesian region. You can check for a price estimate for Katowice > Oświęcim (Auschwitz) on their site: https://www.uber.com/pl/en/price-estimate/
