Plac Solidarności (ENG: Solidarity Square) takes its name from the Solidarity Trade Union movement, which grew out of discontent in the nearby shipbuilding industry, and this particular site was where supporting civilian protests were gathered en masse in August 1980.
It is located in the area in front of the historic Gate No. 2 of the Gdańsk Shipyard and over the wall from the European Solidarity Centre. In the centre is the imposing Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers 1970 (also known as the Monument of the Three Crosses), which was erected as part of the 21 demands of the August Accords. Lining the northern wall are various plaques and sculptures, which are tributes of solidarity from various other unionised associations from all over the world. Between 1971-1981, the 'Doki' tramline loop operated here, which had replaced the loop at Targ Węglowy.
