The Market Hall and all of Gdansk's top sights and experiences can be found in our new guidebook. See what it looks like here!

One of the strangest buildings in the city, Gdańsk's Hala Targowa (market hall) wouldn’t look out of place posing as a provincial 19th-century train station in the south of France. It is currently being rennovated to become a food hall, and is closed to the public until 2026. Built in 1896 in a Neo-Gothic style, rennovations in 2005 revealed the foundations of one of the city’s oldest churches, the 12th century Church of St. Nicolas, underneath the main market building. The church’s foundations have been left as they were found, providing a small, living archaeology museum in the basement along with a display of photographs, objects found during the excavations and drawings of how the church might have looked. You can also visit the Romanesque Cellars whose entrance can be found in the courtyard outside.

If you're a British expat living in Gdansk or just a visitor who would like to purchase British brands of cigarettes, you might be interested to know that the tobacco kiosk in the covered market is one of the few places that sells Lambert & Butler and Superkings. You can purchase single packets or cartons of 200 for 113 PLN [Jan 2011]. Enter from the entrance on Panska and the kiosk is on your left.
